But before we get into details lets answer some basic questions!

What is Intrinsically Safe fire detection?

Intrinsically safe is a methodology used to ensure the safe use of electronic equipment within hazardous areas.

Where a mixture of explosive gas or dust is present within the environment electrical equipment must be tested to ensure that it will not be an ignition source for the explosive environment.

Commonly, two methods are adopted to solve this problem –

Explosion Proof (also known as Flame Proof) – this is where electrical devices are encapsulated within an enclosure, often made of rugged materials such as aluminium, stainless steel or GRP, to contain any possible spark risk

Intrinsically safe – an engineering philosophy where energy is limited to the hazardous area ensuring that electronic devices will not be an ignition risk as they do not carry enough electrical energy to spark.

LGM products offers solutions for both Explosion Proof and Intrinsically Safe products but when it comes to fire detection Intrinsically safe is the common solution.

Why use Intrinsically Safe fire detection?

Intrinsically safe products allow ongoing functionality of the fire detection device without compromising performance.

Explosion proof products encapsulate the electronics. This is highly effective for output devices such as sounders and beacons. However, when the product is designed to measure environmental elements, such as smoke particles or heat increase, you need to allow the atmosphere to pass through the electrical components. Therefore, explosion proof engineering is not affective.

Intrinsically safe devices are designed to limit the energy within the device and not be an ignition risk and therefore can allow atmospheric conditions within their enclosures.

This ensures that smoke and heat detection products can be used within the hazardous areas when they are Intrinsically safe approved.
