Intrinsically Safe and Explosion Proof are design methodologies which prevent electrical devices being the cause of ignition in a hazardous area.
What is Intrinsically Safe?
Intrinsically Safe is where devices do not have enough energy to spark and thereby cannot create an ignition point.
What is Explosion Proof?
Explosion Proof (also know as Flame Proof) is where the electronics are encapsulated into an ‘explosion proof’ enclosure. This enclosure can contain any ignition that maybe caused due to a spark within the device.

The different methodologies provide different solutions and a full safety audit of the site should always be performed by an accredited professional to ascertain a sites hazardous area classification.
Is Intrinsically safe better than Explosion Proof?
Although one methodology can not be said to be ‘better’ or ‘worse’ than the other, each has it’s own advantage.
Explosion Proof devices are not restricted in energy like Intrinsically Safe and this means you can design higher output sounders and beacons. Such as the D1X range for example.
Also Explosion Proof products enclosures are highly durable. Commonly made from marine grade aluminum, toughened composites like GRP, or even stainless steel.
This means Explosion proof products can be the better choice for very harsh environments which are also hazardous areas.
