To operate electronic equipment in hazardous areas in Europe, ATEX certification is required under the EU directive 94/9/EC. Similar regulations exist in North America through IECEX and UL listings for hazardous atmospheres. Areas with explosive mixtures of air, gases, and dust require certified products.
